We want to wire our external speaker to the VHF radio with a way to disconnect it if we want to just listen inside the cabin without broadcasting to the whole marina. What parts would we need? I don't know what to call the parts to google it.

@Sailorgal49 Let's start with what you do know.
What is the make and model of the VHF radio?
Do you have external speakers now?
Are you just interested in the outside speaker or do you also want to be able to talk on the VHF radio from the cockpit?

SPDT switch to select the speaker used. You don't want to blast the inside speaker when you use the outside one.

Depending on the make/model, some have the speaker attached to the cover so as others said, simply remove the appropriate cover. drill a hole of appropriate size to attach a toggle switch and run the wires to the location where you plan to mount an ext speaker.
