Hi everyone again. Another question....so many things to do on a new boat. we want to keep our 393 in commercial survey and the local requirement (among other things like having 2 metal firebuckets on board?!!, is that the radio be wired to an independent battery with an isolating switch and a voltmeter. I was thinking of putting a small sealed 12V lead acid (motor scooter?) battery in the compartment behind the hinged radio panel and keeping the battery on charge from the 12V supply to the radio. Anyone done something similar, or could suggest a better alternative? (especially with a wiring diagram) Thanks Andy on "AMALIE"

The idea is rediculous.

The idea may have had some useful application in the past, but on modern yachts with superior battery storage, it is rediculous. Your plan to charge a 12 volt battery with a 12 volt battery is not possible. There is not sufficient potential difference to transfer from one to the other.

seen it done

what you could do is install a small battery on a switch and use an eco-charger to keep it charged properly without the risk of over-charging it. whether it is worth the $$$ is your choice but I never saw a simpler method.

ridiculous ...but.....I have to do it

Thanks everyone for your help I think I will just parallel the battery with one of the house batteries so it is on charge, install an isolating switch and assume I will never need to use it. Andy
