I have some wire that is labeled "marine sae j378b and j1128" but there is no awg marking on any of it. Have over 10' and it appears to be at least 12 ga and maybe as big as 8 ga. How do I determine gauge?
I came up with this when I Googled those numbers. They appear to be spec numbers. not gauges. SAE J1128 (Type GPT), SAE J378B.
A wire stripper may help you with the size
Yes, I googled the numbers and came up with standards.
I dont have a stripper for bigger than 12 ga. This does appear bigger than 12 ga by that measure but not 100% sure hpw accurate I can be with that.
Its labeled marine grade and meets sae standards for marine engine wiring. Are you saying there are wires that meet these standards that are not tinned?
The bike ride to the hardware store yesterday just about killed me. Lots of hills...and no other transpo.
And marine supply stores are at least double the distance.
Are you measuring the bare wire? 6 gauge is.1620 and 7 is .1443. These are the diameters for single strand solid wire. The tinned stranded wire used in marine applications may measure differently.....not sure.
Yes, bare wire. Sliced a bit of jacket and pulled it back a bit to keep wire round, measured in that gap in the jacket. It is stranded so I suspect it would measure different than single strand
