I live in North Carolina where the temperatures rarely fall below freezing for any length of time to cause our inland lake to freeze. As such, I am planning on sailing year round and do not plan on pulling the boat out of the water. However, I am concerned with the water ballast freezing. Is there something I could do to prevent the ballast from freezing - like adding anti-freeze in the ballast. Any recommendation would be helpful. Thanks, Mark...

Mark, The water in the ballast tank can't freeze

unless the lake the boat is on freezes solid. Since the lake is ice free the water temp of the lake will hold the ballast water at the same temp. The water in drains and pumps is a totally different item. If the air around these hoses/pipes/pumps gets below freezing they will freeze. Put 1/2 to 1 gal of bleach in the ballast tank to keep it "fresh" and enjoy the winter sailing. Ray S/V Speedy 95 H26
