As many of you know we bought a new 2001 H260 this year. Being first time boat owners we are new at winterizing. This past weekend we pulled her out of her slip for the winter. We did everything we could think of to protect her for the freezing temps. We are keeping her in the marina yard and are getting her shrink wrapped. The engine will be removed and winterized/ stored with a local shop. My question is: Does any H260 or H26 owners have any checklists, hints, stories that would help me? We took down the mast and removed some rigging. The mast and furler will be shrink wrapped with the boat. What is the best way to protect the fresh water system? The fixed head? Does the ballast tank need any special attention? We took out all the cushions. Could we have left them and just used damp magnets? I read the manuals, but they wern't nearly detailed enough to make me feel safe. Thanks, Jay

Also, as a side note. When removing the rigging I found one of the turnbuckles bent where it attaches to the chainplate. This bothered me. We only raised/lowered the mast once in the beginning of the season and all rigging was inspected and found to be OK. I don't know how this happened. I'm just glad it held!

Jay, I don't know of any other way to bend
a turnbuckle other than when raising the mast. I found all 4 of mine bent when we bought the boat. I replaced them with new turn buckles from West Marina and promptly bent one my self. I have now installed 1.25 sets of bolts. What I did to stop the problem was to tape them upright while raisinf the mast. Another good idea next spring is to check your mast shroud tension as your rigging has now had time to strech out its newness. Ray S/V Speedy

Not sure how much agreement there is on this , but a few years ago I read in some sailing mag, that when shrink wrapping you need to have some means of ventilation , it seems that in the beginning people were trying to keep out air and that is not the best thing to do , just passing on what I have read, are u winterizing your outboard or having it done, good luck Mike

Actually The shrink wrapping will have ventalation and moisture pad down below. My engine is being winterized and stored indoors by our marina.

Bent Turnbuckle
I think quite a few have experianced this. If it is of any help to everyone what we do is get an ocky strap. Attach one hook through the top of each turnbuckle and stretch up and attach the other hook to the lifeline. This keep a slight amount of tension on the turnbuckles and makes sure they are in the upright position. They have enough give in them to stretch whent the mast get upright. Then simply undo them and slide back down the plastic sleeves. Hope this helps cos if you raise the rigging and bend these critters you would be mad to go sailing untill they are replaced.

To help prevent bent turnbuckles
I cut a long triangle of rubber from an old inner tube, (10" X 2") and fed it through the space between the turnbuckle and the chainplate U bolt. I pulled it through as far as I could then clipped off both ends. It formed a bushing tight enough to hold the turnbuckle upright. We dry sail the boat and these bushings have held up all season through several riggings and unriggings.

Why did you decide to take it off? I'm "cleaning" the water ballast tank by not fully draining it and pouring some bleach in it before the ride home. Then draining it when I get to Hackettstown.
