winterizing an MD6A or B?

HELP!! It is cold here in MT. How do we winterize our MD6A/B diesel
engine? Specifically, are there drain plugs for the water in the
engine and where are they? We removed the thermostat and pumped
antifreeze through the intake until it came out the exhaust. Can't
find any drain plugs and we can't be sure all the water is out.
Please reply asap as we are sleeping on the boat with a small heater
pointed at the engine in hopes of keeping the 0 degree temps. at bay.

We are new AV owners (the boat just came from CA), new to this sight,
we have no manuals and appreciate any information offered.

P.S. Our other question is... How do we tell if it is an MD6A or an
MD6B?

Thank you, in advance, for your response. Lisa

Lisa,
Here is a link to a site that has lots of pdf manuals for the volvo engines..brbr

http://www.motoren.ath.cx/ brbr

If you need the manual for the boat, email me directly and I can forward one to you.brbr

On the winterizing.. people have been posting about it today, so you should have the emails for that. Unless you just signed up to the vega group tonight. If that is the case, let me know.brbr

I am sort of in the same situation as you but basically, it sounds like you get some antifreeze. Detach the hose that sucks water from outside the boat and feeds it to the engine for cooling. Put the hose into a container that contains a mix of antifreeze and water (mix according to instructions on container). Turn on engine. Watch the exhaust in the back of the boat. When you see antifreeze comming out... your'e good. brbr

I think the hose is the one just at the bottom of the step into the cabin. Lift off the wooden step. The one connected to the valve. I'm not positive, so check the manual on this. The manual will show you the different parts of the motor. The hose will lead to the water pump where the impeller is. Maybe someone else in the group can confirm the hose location.brbr

If you are in zero degree weather (zero F?!), I would just do it and then come back here and ask your other questions then. At least get something into the engine. You don't want a crack. A replacement engine will be about $7.5k or more. brbr

Welcome to the group, Lisa. The drain plug for the block on my MD6B is
near the base of the oil dipstick. If it is really cold and your engine
is sluggishly turning over you can get a magnetic oil pan heater to warm
up the oil (which also should be changed, along with the filter in
preparation for the winter). Even if the engine does not start, if you
can turn it over with the starter you should be able to draw anti-freeze
into the engine until you see it coming out of the exhaust. See the
earlier discussions on this topic. Good luck. Trevor V2915

. . . perhaps more knowledgeable members can correct me if I am wrong
but, if you have an MS reverse gear, as opposed to the combi, it may
also need to be winterized. Trev V2915
