I'm in the process of winterizing my 2000 Catalina 320. I want to avoid filling my water heater with marine/RV antifreeze if I can help it. Does the 2000 320 come with by-pass valves or do I have to install them. If they do come with the 320 where would they be located.
Thanks

Winterizing C320 Waterheater

jajtner,

The answer to your question is that it all depends. I don't think that a hot water heater by-pass is std from Catalina. My dealer has installed them on some boats at the owners request so you may have one. I will be installing one on my C309 next week as I get ready to winterize my boat.

The hot water heater by-pass is behind my water heater and is composed of a pair of 3 way valves and a short hose that shunts between the valves. The valves connect to the cold water intake and the hot water out put where the water heater hoses connect to the Whale water system hoses. After draining your water system (including the hot water heater) you close the 2 3-way valves and pump antifreeze through the water system. The by-pass allows the antifreeze to fill the hot water lines without going through the water heater. You can pour some antifreeze into the water heater if you want or you can just leave it empty with the drain and pressure relief valve open. I also plan to suck the any water that I can out of my water heater using a shopvac.

The C320 does not come with a bypass. In the past, I have taken off the cold in/hot out lines from the heater and jerry rigged them together, then pumped the pink stuff thru the system. Next week I'm going to make a bypass to avoid doing the above in the future.

BTW, there is a good C320 forum you can join from here: http://www.catalina320.com/
