I have a Catalina 22 that I keep on the lake in the DFW area. This is the first year my wife and I have owned a sailboat and kept a boat in the water during winter. Are there any special things we should do for the boat as winter appraoches? I plan on continuing to visit the boat each weekend come rain or shine.

Just sail

Just get out there and sail. This is a great time of year here in DFW to sail. Some of us put a heater set on low on the boat to keep the mold and mildew out of everything. On your boat a 150 wat light bulb might work fine

winterizing in Texas

Congrats on the new boat! Winterizing in Central Texas means putting a couple of wool blankets in and some hot chocolate in a thermos and enjoying sailing without swatting misquitoes! Enjoy. There's nothing better than a good New Years Day sail! David

Thank you

Thanks for the info. I lived in Delaware while in the service (AF) and knew what winterizing up there meant. I wasn't sure if there was anything I needed to be aware or watch for.

Be Careful...

...I'm just a bit north of you, but have been in the DFW area many times in the winter. On several of these occasions, you'd be replacing water lines, hot water heater, etc, if you were not either drained or winterized.

DFW winterizing

Assuming your C22 has an outboard and no water systems, all you have to do is add a winterizing fuel additive to the gas container. If you have any type of fresh water system, I would drain it. Also, since there may be a number of weeks when you are not sailing because the weather does not cooperate, you may want to store your sails below or at home. Otherwise, have fun sailing - that's why we move to places like this.
