Ahhhh! We had . . . . . SNOW! . . . . about 5" yesterday and about 6" today . . . . . Temperature is 32°C 0°F (Back ground) I can't get moorage here so I am anchoured in a small bay with a bunch of livaboards. I have my dingy locked up on the shore. This is my first winter with a boat. I have been anchoured in the spot for about 2 weeks. I went down to the boat yesterday to check on it. Highway was slushie several vehicles in the ditch along the way. Parked the car and slid down the Black Berry covered slope and managed to stop with only a few thorns and not in the water. My dingy was upside down . . .BUT . . .there is no beach just the steep bank. I flipped the boat over and ended up with about 4" water in the bottom of it. I treied to empty it out but not having anyplace to stand I couldn't get much out so I gave up and just climbed into the dingy. I rowwed out to my boat which is tied up to a large log. As I started to climb out my cell phone fell out of my jacket pocket and landed in the bottom of the boat . . . Thank goodness that the boat was leaning to one side and the phone missed the water in the bottom. Climbed out onto the log and almost fell off the other side. I looked back and there was my cell phone again falling out but onto the seat of the dingy. I put the phone in my pants pocket. Anyway I got into my boat and all I could find is a little 3" dust pan to shovel the snow off my boat. So there I am crawling around on my hands and knees tossing snow over the side with a little dust pan (NOTE TO SELF: Get something more substantual to get the snow off the boat). by the time I was finished I was soaked, I went down inside and fired up the cook stove and put the cast iron fry pan on it to disipate the heat. The R.C.M.P. came by doing boat checks. I wanted to stay longer but being wet I got out a bailer and bailed out the dingy and rowwed back, this time I pulled the dingy up to the top of the bank and chained it up. Hurried back to the car and fired it up to get some heat. (NOTE TO SELF: Find my rubber boots)

I Went Sailing

Yesterday dawned bright and sunny. I planned on decorating the boat for Christmas. Warm wind blowing at 10-12 knots, the hell with decorating I went sailing. Beautiful day. There are thousands of your country men who have sailed down here to escape the cold up north. There are looking for their flip flops. I invite you to come and join them. It is lovely here.

hey topaz - that's global warming eh?

we hit 55 today and may hit 65 tomorrow. I remember when we used to live in Richmond back in the '70's and got a rare drop of snow. It was a real hoot to see west coasters trying to drive in the stuff. Just be glad you're not in Calgary or Saskatoon eh?

32C Could be Global Warming

That is 90F. It is unusual to get snow when it is that warm. Even if you take an average of the two temperatures, that is 45F which is still to warm for snow.

Texas Weather - Winter....

It's winter in N. Texas. Lakes are down. tomorrow's weather... high of 80+. Rain & Thunderstorms in the evening. Down to 25F the night after (two nights?) Might be snow. but the wind will probalby blow it all to OK. We get their dust 'blowed south. They get our snow 'blowed north (or so it seems). I suppose we might get a thunderstorm or tornado warning. It's turns to winter in about a day... --jerry

C'mon Dan - give ol' Topaz a break eh?

He's not the only one to confuse that friggin' celsius nonsense with farenheit. Besides - he's from Nanaimo and gets special treatment because of his famous chocolate delicacies known world wide.

Boo Hoo

Hi there Topaz from the other side of the rock pile. Here I sit with my feet up. Outside it is -25C (That has to be somewhere way below zero F) My boat is all covered up for the winter and sitting on a trailer. I want a sail so bad I think a warm bathtub is as close as I can get to one. I feel for the West coasters trying to shovel snow with their teaspoons and cookie trays. I could lend you a snow shovel if it helps. I have to wait another 140 or so more sleeps before the boat goes back in the water. It may be longer if this deepfreeze hangs around. Already we have more snow than the last two years and winter is not officially begun yet. I make do with frequent visits to this site. You guys are fun. Gotta go shovel some white stuff. Take care out there. Ken

Sorry Dan I WAS doing fine with the temperatures but then I knew I had to translate it for Americans and ended putting the wrong letter with the temperatures . . . . ;-) Hey, I wasn't complaining about the S.N.O.W. or the cold . . . I did grow up on the Praries & lived a few miles from the North West Territories In Saskatchewan. I was just chatting about the fact that I wasn't prepaired with a small plastic scoop to remove the snow . . . as I do not want the boat to get TOP heavy , AND, Rubberboots (water shoes do not work well in the winter) . . . . I was tempted to take her out for a sail but there was storm winds called for.

Picture of "Our Neighborhood"

Topaz - yeah, it's c-o-l-d out there! And it seems that it's hard to get used to it and as the years go by the colder it gets. Here's a picture from yesterday when you wrote your post. Just flew over the Gulf Islands and Victoria and on approach to SEA (aka SeaTac) and I got this picture of the southern Olympics, a little south of you, as viewed from over Bremerton and looking toward Aberdeen WA and the Pacific. Come spring (aka June) as you sit in the cockpit while anchored in your favorite cove you'll have all but forgotten what you've gone through. By the way, those blackberries make great freezer jam.

November 29

Well last night at about 6p.m. I drove down to the boat about 45km (28 miles)down the highway. Lots of snow falling and winds gusting to about 60-70knots. Visibilty was limited. The lots of snow on the road, people driving at 60k/h (37m/h). Had to shovel the dingy out from under 6" (notice didn't use metric) of snow. I dragged the dingy down to the water and rowed out to the boat. When climbing into the sailboat my foot slipped and I attempted to walk on water . . . didn't work . . . Good thing I had a good grip on the lifelines. The cockpit was almost full of snow. Used a plastic dustpan from home to shovel off the boat 6" of snow on the decks. Plastic dustpans get brittle when it is below 0ºC (32ºF) . . . . . (NOTE TO SELF: figure out a cockpit cover system). I looked at other boats anchoured around the tarps covering their cockpits had all collapsed under the weight of the snow. Oh right, should state that the snow we get is heavy wet snow.

Bird Feathers Clogging Cockpit Drains

Topaz - at this rate you're going to be worn out by the time spring comes! Don't know if you have a walk-through transom or not, but if you don't, one thing to look out for is bird feathers clogging the cockpit drains. Several years ago there was a boat in our marina that had an unusual attitude in it's slip. Upon inspection I found the cockpit was full of water to the point it was going over the bridge deck and into the cabin. The boat had the drains clogged by feathers (owner was in the Navy and overseas). It was mid-winter and the water was freezing cold but I rolled up my sleeve, reached down, and pulled the feathers out. Pulling my arm out of the water it was beet-redish-blue. Also notified the harbor master of the situation so they could contact the owner or whomever was looking after the boat. Anyway, this is something to be aware of.

Thanks

I checked the drains to make sure they were clear. . . I do find that Crows have been using my boat to drop mussels on it to break them open . . . . they make a mess . . . . but with the snow they loose them .:)

hey Topaz - try one of these mini shovels.

It used be the Rubbermaid 2006 model commercial quality dustpan that we used to shovel off the snow. It remained flexible to about minus 20. You can get one at your local janitorial supply store in Nanaimo.
