Isn't the marina supposed to use bubblers to prevent that from happening or are you in the water at your own risk? Is the water lower than your normal low tide? This could be a long cold winter by the indications ...

long winter already

There are bubblers and they are running. I was pretty startled at how frozen the water was (it's brackish). The water was very very low (and it wasn't low tide yet). The winds today were really high and I think it was helping blow the water out of the creek.

All this snow! All this cold! All this ice!

We'd better do something about this Global Warming or were going to freeze!

Manny, not only do they need to bubble your slip but you need to put a bit more slack in your dock lines as well. Your boat is clearly hanging which is putting undue stress on your deck and dock cleats. FWIW it's likely to freeze even deeper as winter progresses. Good luck.

Hey Mike, fortunately for me that Pearson isn't mine, neither is the other boat on the other dock. Mine is further out in deeper water and was not hitting bottom. The lines on mine have enough slack to make it through this low water event. There is a bubbler to my port side which is helping for sure.

And if the boat in the picture slacks his tight lines, the boat will fall over. The lines on the other side are slack.

Whenever we have strong NW winds and a spring tide we have very low water events on the western shore of the upper Chesapeake Bay. I have seen boats hanging on their lines several times in the last ten years.

Manny, glad to hear your boat is fine. Can't imagine the stress generated on the lines and cleats.

It's amazing how the wind will drive the water out of the bay. I've been spending time on a Hudson River project lately in West New York directly across from mid-town Manhatten and have been watching the tides. There was a day with a strong south wind that pushed so much water up the river that it practically eliminated low tide.

I was entertaining leaving my sailboat in the water in the future...NOT anymore.
It has been a nasty-cold winter thus far, and that imagery prooves it. Can't remember a spell like this since '77. My slip is surrounded by ice. Fortunately, I got hauled out mid-November. My marina owner even has me on a Hunter 27 shipping craddle, which was pretty cool of him.

Hey Manny!

We've had some low water and plenty of ice up on the NE River. Our ice eaters have been keeping our marina docks relatively ice free (except when we had a power outage in the area and ice formed in short order).

Expect even lower water later in the winter. The low water I've seen in our marina isn't nearly as low as I've seen it get in the past few winters. Ross is right about the NW winds, especially with a full moon cycle to boot.

Good luck and stay warm!

Re: Hey Manny!

One winter several years ago there was a low tide at night and it also got very cold the ice froze hard and tight around some of the piles and when the tide came in it lifted some of the piles a couple of feet.

I just read in BoatUS that there are more claims for freeze related damage from the Southern states then Northern in any year. Up here we have no choice. We must pull the boat and winterize early each fall. My fresh water sailing grounds freezes to several feet.

My marina is just up river from Wabasha, MN where all the ice fishing houses seen in the movie "Grumpy Old Men" are located.

The big spring event is the first barge passing through, breaking the ice.

I hope you Southerners thaw soon and can sail again.

Our deep bays and huge tidal range keep most of our harbors open. Folks do use bubblers when they leave boats in all winter. Our salty environment usually has the bays(the ones that do freeze) melting mid March at the latest as the sun is higher and temperatures rise.

some one told me that if left in the frozen ice that the ice will crush the hull up in wi....that would just about run my day for a long time

Up here in the PNW (49th parallel) we have docks and fingers that rise up and down with the tides. The docks do not sit on top of the pilings as I see in the pics, but instead sit to one side of the piling with a metal loop surrounding the piling that is attached to the dock. This way the boat and docks rise and fall with the tides, lines do not have to be adjusted. As far north as we are the waters rarely if ever freeze, likely due to the large tides and warm Japanese current plus the odd El Nino current. Once every decade or so the rivers will freeze but that is rare. We may be in the far north but we do not suffer the cold winters of some of our southern neighbors. I have never seen the harbour freeze in all my life here.

Hey Ross!

did you ever see "Pearl Harbor" next to NERYC before the new owners cleaned out the dockage mess? Many of the pilings were popped up for the reason you mentioned. One dock looked like a Harrier carrier deck for a couple of years!
