What's the consensus as to whether or not to loosen shrouds and stays during our boat's long winter nap? I have a 1989 Hunter 335. First time storing it with mast up.Thanks in advance.
This was addressed just a few weeks ago. I think the concensus was to keep all shrouds tight since the shock loads would be far greater than a steady pull and more likely to do damage. Check back a few weeks. Many replies.
Leave Stays Tight and boat should be standing on it's keel. Hull supports should only be in contact - check hull and make sure it is not deformed where the pads contact hull. The mast will bend and sway if shrouds are not tight. While a little bit of movement may do no harm it certainly can do no good. Removing lower shrouds will allow the mast to bow under wind loads. The mast was designed to be supported by the shrouds when up.High winds will result in forces on the mast and boat. Make sure the hull supports are adequate.
The aluminum mast will expand and contract more than the boat will with changes in temperature. Winter weather will make them looser than they are during summer. Haven't touched the ones on my h34 during the past nine winters in Vermont.Barry
