I'm entering my first winter season with my 2006 Hunter 31. Does anyone know of a supplier for sailboat covers? If so, are they so pricey that I should consider making my own out of tarp?

Not sure what area you are in - but, it is a bit late to order a custom cover for this winter. I purchased a custom cover three years ago for around $1,400 for our 30' boat.

We tried plastic traps the first winter, but they were shredded by the end of December.

You might be best advised to have it shrink wrapped for this year, I would guess ~ $400 - $600

Good luck

We bought ours for $1600 last February at Strictly Sail in Chicago from The Canvas Store. He took our photos and measurements for the bimini on our 1987 Hunter 31 and it fit beautifully. Our marina raised shrink-wrapping to $700.

Here on the mid-Chesapeake, winters are usually not too severe (thanks to global warming), but it can and does snow once in a while. However, my primary concern when boat is on the hard is bird poop and stuff that seems to precipitate out of the air and results in dirty specks all over the deck. I use 3-different sized cheap blue poly tarps (total cost <$50) to cover my boat as follows: one over the fordeck deck and tied under the boat, one draped over the boom like a tent and tied to the toe rail, and one that gets tied to the underside of the boom to the vang bale with the fore ends tied to the toe rail and the aft end going over the wheel and secured to the outboard ends of the pushpit and swim ladder. This encloses the cockpit completely. I've found that if I add additional clamps between the grommets, I can make them very secure and they never flap. I typically get 3 years out them and they do a pretty good job for the price.

If you are in milford CT as your profile states you have Fairclough right up i New Haven on Ella T. Grasso Blvd. ( They advertise in Soundings. ) They have a reputation for making among the best winter covers.
