Here on the mid-Chesapeake, winters are usually not too severe (thanks to global warming), but it can and does snow once in a while. However, my primary concern when boat is on the hard is bird poop and stuff that seems to precipitate out of the air and results in dirty specks all over the deck. I use 3-different sized cheap blue poly tarps (total cost <$50) to cover my boat as follows: one over the fordeck deck and tied under the boat, one draped over the boom like a tent and tied to the toe rail, and one that gets tied to the underside of the boom to the vang bale with the fore ends tied to the toe rail and the aft end going over the wheel and secured to the outboard ends of the pushpit and swim ladder. This encloses the cockpit completely. I've found that if I add additional clamps between the grommets, I can make them very secure and they never flap. I typically get 3 years out them and they do a pretty good job for the price.
