We had horrendous wet weather a few weeks ago that exposed a new leak! It is one of my main side window perspex panels with ports set into it on my H42. The gasket material that is currently in there is still "rubbery" to the touch- so just wondering- what material should I use to re-seal? I plan to carefully cut out a "V" shaped wedge between the fiberglass topside and perspex panel and then re- seal with new material.

dont know if you have Dow 795 down under but if you do it is a very good sealant for that purpose if not get something similar at any rate you should be able to purchase some on the net and have it shipped to you the shipping will more than likely be more than the product cost

Hi Eian, be careful trying to just sealing the outer edge. I tried that with two different sealers. They only lasted 30 to 60 days! If you are going to spend the time I would do it right the first time! Pull it all the way out and reset it with the Dow 795! Then you won't be doing it again!

P42 scuttle rebedding

I am the poster child for the outer edge reseal short-term fix. And I guess I'd emphasize short-term. Dean is spot-on about it.

When I replaced my main windshield in 2000, I used Dow 795 and it's lasted. I've never taken the time to properly remove and rebed the side windows (largely due to my trepidation about chipping/cracking them while trying to get them out). I have many times scraped out as much of the sealant as possible and replaced it with the Dow 795. To nobody's surprise (including me), it leaks again within a period of time. Sometimes one year, sometimes two, MAYBE three. I look forward to doing the job right "one day."

Eian, I've purchased Dow 795 at a glazier in Whangarei, NZ, so I know it's used regularly in your neck of the woods. I bought a case of 12 for around $100 several years ago. It's got a pretty short "use by" period, so check that. However, the professional boat window guy I asked said the only problem with out-of-date Dow 795 is that it dries up and hardens in the tube. It doesn't "go bad" so long as it remains wet and usable. I've still got a bunch of tubes that may be 5 years old and are still flexible. (But if I were going to do what Dean did, I'd buy new stuff).

(OT here and I apologize). Dean, I spent a long time on your webpage looking at what you've done with your P42. Outstanding work. I can't thank you enough for taking the effort to so thoroughly document your projects. It's a big help (and inspiration) to me. I now feel so much better about undertaking the front tank R & R.

Cheers,
Paul
