I am currently looking into having an electric windless (horizon 400/horizontal. Can anyone advise the best method of installation? Thanks: Matt

Windlass

I have a Horizon 500 on a C30. You may want to consider a larger windlass than the 400 for the ground tackle on a 30-foot boat as heavy and beamy as the C30. The 500 is no longer made, so I would go with the 600 for this sailboat. I have a large stainless steel backing plate mounted under the deck, inside of the foward part of the anchor locker. The plate is large to distribute the load, and the forward legs of the bow pulpit are also through-bolted to the plate. A handheld switch box is kept on the side of the anchor locker. A second rocker switch is mounted in the cockpit, on the side of the engine control panel. A hawse pipe through the deck and into the locker is just behind the windlass capstan.

Thank Tom, more Info?

Thanks Tom, A few extra questions, if you don't mind. Sitting the 400 forward of the anchor locker is very tight for space. How well does it pull from that far forward and where do you tie off when the achor is set? Also how long is your hawse pipe and how do you get on with only a shallow anchor well for rope and chain placement? Did you purhcase yourhanheld switch box thru horizon? I appreciate your comments, as I would like do do this right the first time and gain browny points with the wife.. Thanks: Matt PS. If you have pics, plse email them to: matt@mmifreight.com

More info

Matt, I have the '82 C30 tall rig with bow sprit (TRBS). The windlass is not mounted forward of the anchor locker, but it's mounted just forward of the anchor locker lid (it's mounted over the forward part of the locker). There looks like quite a bit of room between the lid and the bow to me, enough for a larger windlass than the Horizon 500 - like the 600 (I was under there again a few weeks ago to rebed the bow pulpit bolts). For a non-BS C30, the pull angle will be larger between the anchor roller and the windlass for sure compared to my installation. I'm not sure that would be a problem though. I use the engine to motor up to the anchor during retrieval and avoid the strain on the windlass (like S-L recommends in their instructions). I am also not sure how much room there is between the anchor roller hardware of a non-BS C30 and the anchor locker lid. I will have to check on the hawse pipe. I use an all-chain rode (1/4"). The well depth can accomodate well over the 250 feet of chain that I have. The well is maybe 1/2-filled with the chain (the anchor, a Delta 22 lb., is kept on the bow sprit roller). The switch box is the standard accessory from S-L, the one with the coiled wire. The removable box connector is permanently mounted on the aft inside wall of the locker, up high and in the corner of the locker where it won't get wet. Using a chain/rope rode, you could tie off on the standard bow cleats, again it looks like there would be enough room even with the windlass mounted. I have to use a chain stopper for the all-chain rode. No pictures of the windlass, but I could take some
