windlass needed?

I'm curious about why you think a windlass is needed on a boat that requires only a small and lightweight anchor. I've seen handicapped and the elderly make other arrangements for getting large or heavy anchors over and retrieve them without using a windlass. To install a windlass with switches, wiring, and dedicated battery puts a total of about 100 lbs more weight up in the bow plus at least a grand of cash. Is there perhaps an alternative? Just curious.

bow roller?

I'm with Night Sailor. You aren't referring to a bow roller are you? BWY sells them for the 26M

After an anchoring interlude with my wife she had to raise the anchor from 15 ft of water, broke a nail and a bracelet. If I was interested in more interludes I would have to come up with a better anchoring retrieval system. $3500 later I now have an electric windlass and can set and retrieve the anchor from the wheel, and the interludes continue. Quite cost effective all things considered.

Right now there's a post on Manual Windlasses. There's a lot of good feedback and alternative ways of bringing up anchor.
