We'd like to put a Windlass on our Legend 35.5 Has any one done this? What type of windlass did you install and where?

Thought of it

but haven't been able to figure out a simple way to do it. Like you, I don't want to be making major cuts in the anchor locker area. So I keep pulling it in by hand.

I've got one

I have one on my 35.5. It is mounted inline with the anchor cradle, just aft of the anchor locker bulkhead. So the motor and control box are in the Vee berth. The Windlass is a Lofran Marlin 400W. I have owned this boat for about a month and have not had the chance to go out on the hook to see how it works.

Any pictures Jon?

I would also like to install a wimdlass on my 35.5 but like Jim I can't seem to come up with a installation which does not mess up the deck or v-berth.

Not bad!

How hard was it to get the power cables up to that area? Do you use a dedicated battery? Ballpark cost of installation?

Thanks

Thanks Jon, for the pics and info. Not sure if I want to do that to my V-birth eithier. Anyone else have a plan?

Anchor locker hatch

Jon: Your picture shows the chain going over the anchor locker hatch. Is that inaccessible now? Also, what feeds the chain into the hole in the deck? Markdb

more on mine

Keep in mind that I did not install this and have not owned the boat long enough to try it out yet(1.5 months). The power cables are layed along the starboard side cabin, through the closet in the Vee, in the starboard bench seat in the main cabin to the engine compartment where it is connected to a breaker and the house battery at the battery switch. One thing that is hard to see in the picture is the PO had a line attached to the chain near the anchor to take the tension. This allows some slack in the chain near the locker, allowing access to the locker. I have thought about placing a chain tensioner next to the locker to keep the chain clear. I think the only thing that feeds the rode and chain in the locker is wishful thinking(or a deck hand). I am yet to see how well that works. I have also thought about building a cabinet around the motor, it does look kinda bad to have it hangin out in the cabin like that.

I installed one myself -love it!

I did basically the same as Jon's pics based on some installations I researched on 35.5's in Seattle. I've had the boat 2 yrs (200' of chain then rode) and anchored probably 50 times and LOVE it (first trip: Desolation and up to 100 deep anchorage). The only difference is I used "starboard" plastic product to create a "channel" from the windlass into the locker, and I have a chain "J" hook installed between the stainless bow roller channel and the cleat. Sorry no pic with me as I'm on the road (however, Desolation Sound in TWO weeks!!) This allows you to put it straight into the locker and not be in the way of opening the hatch as in Jon's pics. You have to feed it manually into the locker due to the shallowness of the locker, but I wasn't into building a drop-in box. I did a LOT of research, mostly on these archives and WestMarine has some articles as well online. As usual, all kinds of opinions but I opted for using the starting battery as you have to run the same gauge cable to charge it or power it, so why add a seperate battery? (oh yeah, start batt's are designed for rapid discharge/recharge, house batt's are not) Ran the cables the same as Jon's, but he didn't mention this, but after the salon it's run behind the starboard nav station, thru head, into aft cabin (under berth) and then to battery switch in aft cabin. Plan on 30 hrs labor between you and the person you WILL need to help you run cables for some of it. Hint: mount the up/down deck switches where you can kneel on it while feeding it into the chain locker. Also my windlass (anchorman) came w/ an underrated breaker (50amp)which, once pointed out, the retailer came up w/ a 90amp one per packing list. Read up on the snubbing line -you don't want to destroy your windlass after all the work. Well worth the effort... consider the number of times you weren't 100% happy w/ your anchoring and blew it of because it was too much work to re-do it manually :) There's no more peaceful sleep than knowing you're on all-chain rode. Also be prepared to go thru the hoops to replace the bow roller (very custom size, more archives on that but my advice is buy an oversized one and pay to have it ground down) as you'll no doubt increase chain and therefore wear. And hey, if a GIRL can install it... ;-)

Thanks Lori

I'll pass this on to my husband, the one who does the dirty work on our 35.5. It would be all for him anyway since he's the "anchor man". Looking forward to the pictures.
