I have a 1978 H27 and I was wondering if any one has installed a windless on their H27's. It looks like its going to be an interesting job. Their doesn't seem like a lot of area to put everything. I've got most of the parts I need but could use alittle advice on bow roller installation. I'm planning on installing a Maxwell Freedom windlass model # 800. I'm also using a 35 lb CQR anchor. I have a heavy duty bow roller. Any comments or some pictures of your installation. I would appreciate any help I can get before I start cutting any holes.

It seems to me that the use of a 35 lb CQR as the main anchor on an h27 is an overkill. We currently use a 35 lb CQR on an h320 and for years used a 22 lb claw on an h27. Not saying that there would not be extra holding power with the 35 pounder but that perhaps the continious working of the extra weight will be unwarranted. Anchor sizing is a compromise that yields a manageble tackle that meets 95% of the conditions likely to be met. At times I wish we had a windlass to help haul that 35 pounder + chain but I believe you have the option of not needing a windlass at all. A heavier storm anchor can be stowed on board for trips to handle excess conditions. As far as the installation of a windlass consider using a manual one as the h27 does not have much room to place a dedicated battery at the bow and would require massive cable runs to the stern. Consider what would meet your specific needs and go from there.

Why do you need a windlass on a small boat? You may want to consider your anchor retrieval strategy. Motoring forward and pulling in the slack till your line is vertical. Snub the line and wait, allowing the boat to break the anchor loose. Only then do you attempt to pull in the remainder of the anchor. I have to agree with Benny that your 35lb anchor is quite a bit of overkill but should still be a manageable lift.

22 pound Bruce

Our 22 lb. Bruce has handled hundreds of anchorages in 11 years of cruising Erie & Huron.

Do consider lighter ground tackle!
