Apparently, the prior owner of my boat experienced a problem where the rode/chain splice skips out of the gypsy at the bottom of the windlass and smashes the chain into the aft end of the anchor locker. Happened once with me, but my son caught it and stopped the windlass to prevent further damage. I've found the cause and made the adjustment, but I'm sure it will happen again at an in- opportune time, as the splice area is not as flexible as the rode or chain. I've fixed the fiberglass and will reinforce the area with a piece of stainless sheet metal. Anyone else here had the problem, and if so, what did you do to fix it?

Thanks,

Zig

I don't understand the problem. We seldom need to run the chain to rode splice through our windlass but when we have it was not an issue.

I do remember when we bought the new chain and rode we were dealing with Pam Wall at West Marine in Ft Lauderdale, she looked up our windlass to supply the correct chain and rode and said she would have a special splice done that would pass through our windlass without a problem. I don't know why it would need a different splice but maybe that could be an issue in your case. Her contact info is http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...1&storeId=11151&catalogId=10001&page=Pam-Wall

Good luck, Bob

The boat only came with 15 feet of chain. The splice goes through the gypsy when the anchor is hauled all the way up.

???

I don't remember even when I had only 15' of chain having a problem with what you describe but to be honest I really don't understand what is really going on.
maybe some one changed the chain or rode,do you know what model windlass you have or a photo to figure what model it is and than what chain and rode type is suppose to be used.
