Anenometer and Windex
The most common setup is to mount the anenometer (spinny cups) with it's vane on an arm that sticks forward of the mast. You don't need to see the vane from the helm since it's job is to transmit wind speed and direction to a display in the cockpit area. Most manufacturers offer an extended arm that gets the masthead transducer even higher to avoid windflow problems with other masthead gear (like anchor lights, tri-color, VHF antenna etc). The windex is often used as a visual indicator of wind direction (typically more sensitive) from the helm and needs to be placed within eyesight of the helmsman.Hope this helps,Trevor
