Windex

I've had and used them both, currently have a 10. The arms on the 10 are much weaker and get bent where the 15's would survive. But though the 10 has its weak points it has survived many miles (I leave it on all the time, using a small piece of Velcro to hold the pointer in place while trailering).
While no one can tell you which to use, that's going to be personal choice you'll be forced to make. They both work well, the 10 has been on LoKi for little over three years now.

I know it's not a Windex brand, but I put a little cheap one from Pacific Nylon Plastics, (or something like that), up top. It was only about 15 bucks if I recall, and it actually works very well. If I bother to use it.
What works well for me is, is I took a couple of tell-tells, and attached one on each rear stay about eye level, and that way, my eyes are kind of "on the road". While this is not as "accurate" as a wind indicator, it's a nuisance to be sitting in the cockpit, staring straight up in the air, invariably right into the sun, like I'm looking for aliens or something. Now, while I'm utterly certain that they are upon us, seeking out lonely sailors to probe, this is of no consequence to me. I would rather be looking ahead, watching the sails, or the next drunken powerboater bearing down on me. I can dodge them; but the aliens are going to get ya if they want to, I'd rather it be a surprise..

I've got a 10 on my 22, and use it way too much.. Really, all you need it for is to tell where to point the boat prior to hoisting sails. I can tell if I'm pointing too high when the jib starts to luff, and for reaches, I can usually feel the wind on my shoulder, back, or face.

Oh, and 1/4" silk ribbon from the fabric store lasts a lot longer than cassette tape.

Red yarn is also a cheap wind indicator. I use the Windex 15, but simple Newport Tell tales tied to the outer shrouds affixed as high up as you can comfortably see are also invaluable gauges of wind. Although the higher up the tell is, the more accurate it will be overall. I agree that its sometimes hard to crane my neck high enough to see the mast head indicator, especially around a bimini top.

I removed the anchor light from the mast-head,(never used it, and besides, not required on our boats, "Boats less than 7 meters (22.96 feet) are not required to display anchor lights or day shapes unless anchored in or near a narrow channel, fairway or anchorage, or where other boats normally navigate."). So I made an antenna mount that places the antenna in the center of the mast and installed a Davis Windex Av antenna wind vane. Now the winex is in the center of the mast, and a nice big windex is so easy to see.

Don, what about overnight anchoring near drunken power boaters?

Ditto to what Allen said...... "But"....I do normally leave one of those solar powered garden lights sticking into the fishing pole mount on my stern pulpit when we're anchored. But, we normally anchor in designated anchorages. Anchorages are pretty tightly controlled here in the SoCal area, with many requiring permits,(which are normally free).
