Wind Vane Self Steering

Has anyone had any experience of the 'Mister Vee' self-steering system? I believe it's manufactured in the Netherlands.

Actually any advice/recomendation or otherwise relating to all makes of self steering on Vegas would be appreciated.

I know that at least some Vegas have been fitted with the Plastimo Navik unit; though I've been advised that these are (a) No longer manufactured and (b) Fragile - confirmation or dissention of this advice would be appreciated!

A vega owner, Stan Snape has just bought and fitted one. He is sailing round teh UK now. Awaiting a report on it. Spoken to the maker and he sounds a good guy, give him a phone. Was thinking of getting one myself to try it out then sell on aas I have a Navik

Decided to replace my water pump impeller this last weekend (MD6A).

I had noticed that it seems water was dribbling from something on that assembly in the past and decided to redo all of the gasketing on that assembly.

I got the pump cover off ok. Impeller popped right out.

Then the hard part. There are two bolts at the base of the water pump. One is high side and doesn't get much water dripping on it. I was able to fit a small 13mm open end box wrench on it. A normal socket is too long to fit over the bolt head. It bangs into the pump body at the top end of the socket when you try to slide it over the bolt.

The bottom bolt is all corroded. Seems like all the faces might be rusted off.

If I can remove the larger round plate the water pump is attached to, I could pull the whole thing out of the boat and go after that rusted bolt that way.

I was able to remove the bolts that hold the larger round cover on, but it still seemed stuck.

Can I just bang on that cover to get it off? With water pump still attached to it?

thanks,
roy

Bob,
I have a Navik.
I agree: it does look a bit frail at the linkages, but the force
required there is less than one ounce. It performs very well and IMHO
is sturdily built. I bought it used, as they go for a lot less than a
new one, and I wasn't sure if I would use it that much.
As it turns out it gets quite a bit of use, especially during
crossings of Juan de Fuca Straight and the Straight of Georgia. The
only thing I don't like is that one has to heave-to to get the paddle
down and connected, about a three minute operation. Getting it up can
be done while under way if one is careful.

Tony Skidmore circumnavigated in a Navik-equipped Vega and sang high
praise for it.

As Navik is no longer available new, my choice for a new one would
probably be a Pacific Windpilot Light. The paddle on that one flips
up out of the water.

Hope this helps.

Roy,

If you look in the workshop manual, it should be possible to remove
the cover including the pump. Don't bang on the cover - try to get a
screwdriver or knife under it.
Heat (blowtorch) does wonders on rusty bolts, but be careful.

THanks Bob and Ulf, for the suggestions.
I'm sure they will help.
I did look at the manual, and now see that I may need several gaskets to go with this repair. I will order them before my next attempt at this.

Roy, you can make gaskets very easily. Just use old charts or buy
gasket material at the automotive store, use the engine pieces as a
pattern and cut. Use a hole punch for the bolt holes. Trev (V-2915)

Hi Trevor,
That's a good idea for the lids, but the ones that go around the impeller drive shaft look like formed plastic or rubber things..
rb
charts? You mean map charts? Guess that is probably made of tough material.

Roy, yes, I think you can buy a water pump rebuild kit that has the
seals etc. and an impeller-housing gasket. Yes, old admiralty charts
are tough and water resistant. T

The water/oil seals that are in the back of the impellor housing (around the pump shaft) are Type R23 12.7mm (½”) internal, 25.4mm (1”) external 6.4mm (1/4”) width - available via any decent bearing supplier (or on the Internet) for about 50 pence each, or from your friendly local marine Volvo dealer for about £6 each!
