My autohelm st30 wind transducer has a broken paddle that was either hit by a bird or knocked off in an ice storm. My O&I handbook diagram indicates the wind transducer with mounting kit. Can just the top section be replaced above the mounting kit or do I have to replace the entire assembly? I have searched on-line but could not find even the entire assembly. The autohelm is the standard equipment on my Hunter 1994 Legend 355. Has anyone had this same occurance?

Contact Raytheon (current name for "Autohelm" products) - if parts are available, they will have them. A number of years ago they supplied just the wind vane part.....

parts

Ray marine should have them. I had a similar problem with my ST60 and they have the cubs and vane as replacement parts. Just bolts on. Don't drop the tiny set screw while up the mast hanging on with one hand!!!

I replaced the whole mast top unit when my ST 60 anerometer froze (Not frozen but stopped turning). Repair guy didn't mention just replacing the spinning part. I can't really blame him. He had to climb the mast at some risk to his safety - why would he do it and find out later he would have to do it again.
It was nearly $400. The only complaint I had is my windex is still skewed - I hate that. I understand its nearly impossible to align from the top of the mast hanging on a
halyard.
To take the mast down is at least a $700 round trip around here. I keep telling the marinas that they should cut a deal on that because there is so much work "up there" that they would be busy all winter. But no ... most masts stay up season after season around here.

fixing skewed wind instruments

I would have to agree that getting the wind vane to be aligned perfectly is an impossible task with the mast down. With is up the most you can hope for is a cardinal direction (+-45 degrees). Not to fear though, you can use the set up software to un-skew the unit. The exact procedure is in the manual but I recall holding down the left most button for 3 seconds and entering setup mode. Then page to (right 2 buttons) "alignment" and use the right two buttons to add or subtract skew till your instrument vane agrees with your windex. motoring into the wind makes this easy as the skew is displayed imediatly on the unit. Jut add or subtract till she reads straight ahead.
Don't froget to calibreate it too by paging to calibrate and runing the boat in a circle.
