I will be adding a wind speed indicator this spring. Due to the difficultly of running a new wire thru the mast of my '81 Hunter 30, I am considering the new wireless unit from Tacktick. Does anyone have any thoughts or found a discounted price?

looked at this unit

I looked at this unit at the Annapolis boat show and found that they were very proud of their prices. Not a bad idea but you still have to go up the mast. It also needs batteries which you have to replace in the sending unit, back up the mast. I added a wind speed, wind direction this past winter. Question- you have a 1981 boat, when was the last time the wiring was replaced and what shape are you steaming and anchor light in. I had the stick taken down and replaced it all. New wiring, new lights, new TV antenna, and install the wind speed wind direction. I hooked the new wire to the old wire and just slowly pulled it through the pipe in the mast. Might be time to make this a bigger project than you first thought about. Good luck Ian s/v Meant to Be

an interim item on ebay

If you are interested, eBay (West Marine store) has a hand-held wind meter currently bid at less than $70. Retails for around $150. If anyone knows anything about the hand-held jobs, please speak out.

Wireless

I have a 1988 Legend35. My Mast is removed for the first time I've had the Boat in 4 years and it would be easy to install a Wired Unit, but I'm impressed with Tack-Tic Windless Unit. Cost more, but I think its worth it. No Batteries to install because it's Solar. Will run Days without Sunshine, and has no Seams to worry about leakage. Saw one at the Boat Show in an underwater tank. Real impressive. Besides, you don't have to have a Mounting Nightmare for the Display.
