I was thinking of installing a basic wireless masthead wind instrument on my Hunter 29.5 this spring. Does anyone have experience with the wireless instruments. Do they work as advertised and are they reliable?
This seems weird but I was just checking the forums to ask the same question. I also have a 29.5 and I am looking at the Tactick T033 Entry Level Wireless Wind Systemfrom Suunto. It’s seems affordable and reliable from what I have been reading.
My question for the forum is regarding the masthead. The 29.5 has a tapered mast at the top and I am not sure if there is enough real estate at the top of the mast for the wind sensor. I would appreciate any information regarding this. Let me know if you have installed a wind sensor, especially a wireless one, at the top of your 29.5 mast.
To answer your question there is plenty of 'real estate' up there. No wind instrument should be mounted directly to the mast. It should ride on a stalk high above and forward of the mast so that it reads the wind unobstructed by the end plate vortex of the sails.
Any masthead units mounted directly to the mast will never give you a true reading.
