My O'day 28 has an old non-working Moor Electronics apparent wind indicator instrument and sender unit that I've had removed and will send in for repair. The sender unit, with a windex and spinning cups, looks pretty much burned up in the sun and the insulation has come off the wires. I suspect it's junk but will attempt to salvage thru their repair center. The wiring harness is junk for sure at this point. Not sure how old it is. I'd like to consider a replacement instrument with a neat analog display with red and green stripes maybe and wind speed. And I'd like to stay at the cheaper end of things. Any suggestions? Moor Electronics has one, and Raymarine Seatalk 90 I've taken a quick look at, but don't have real complete pricing yet and I'm afraid they are more than I'd like to spend. If I could do this for less than $500, I would, I guess that is about my limit to spend. Thanks for any leads or ideas, dave

Dave: I too have been pricing wind instruments (anemometers?). They all seem to run higher than $800 with the ray marine products tending to the $1,000 range for the Sea-Talk feature I'd guess. There is one out there that combines direction and speed all contained in one whirly-gig. I don't see many of these around the marinas I sail to so I suspect they aren't too reliable or they would be used more. A case of people voting with their dollars? Probably. I'd set my sights a bit higher on the price. After all installing the thing whether you take a ride to the top of the mast or lower the mast is a bit of a chore. Found the Raymarine ST40 Wind System Roto E22047 at Dave's marine http://www.brokenlegdave.com/Manufacture/Raytheon/E22047.htm for $271 and it comes with the sensor. I think it's everything I would need. It's not as fancy or pretty as I would have liked, but will do the job. I'm 275# and won't consider going to the top of the mast. My mechanic will climb the mast and help me run the cable. Think I should put the cable in plastic pipe or have styrofoam blocks on it? Would I regret it if I didn't? dave

wire ties too
Dave: Besides a piece of conduit or foam blocks to stop wire slap inside the mast I've read that if you put plastic wire ties every few feet and leave the long ends just sticking out it will buffer the wire or coax from slapping the inside of the mast-a real nuisance at anchor with the boat swaying in the swells. If you don't muffle the noise you will probably regret it later. Thanks for the link I'm going to check it out. Mike
