I have a DataMarine wind indicator. I'm guessing it's 10 years old or more. Last season, oftentimes the wind direction indicator (arrow) would register in the opposite direction. If we cycled the circuit breaker on and off it would usually flip back to the correct position. This season, it seems to always be in the opposite position. Any ideas as to how to remedy this?

Run in circles - scream and shout

Actually the screaming and shouting is optional, but frequently seems to be tried first to remedy this situation. Turning 2 slow circles (2 knots or less) after powering up your wind instrument will probably realign your instrument. If this doesn't do it, try the first remedy again (or as a last resort, consult your User's Manual).

Datamarine Wind Instrument 180 Error

This is a not uncommon problem with older Datamarine wind instruments. When it happens, swing the boat until the pointer is straight up, turn the instrument off at the instrument, swing the boat until the wind is over the bow, and turn the instrument back on. This will usually reset the 180 ambiguity, at least for a time. The lower segment of Datamarine wind machine sensors (wind speed) is repairable, and Datamarine maintains a repair facility in Pocasett, Massachusetts. The upper segment (wind direction) is potted and not practically repairable. However, replacement sensors can be had from the same source.
