winches

I'm the proud new owner of V 1553 "Blu Fin" and couldn't be
happier. It came with 2 speed, self-tailing winches--does anyone
know if these were standard? (I'm having some trouble with the port
winch--does anyone know where I can find information on how they
work?)

I appreciate this group--the Vega really is a remarkable boat--we
were out on Huron today and with reefed main and roller, she was as
balanced as could be.

Hi Victor,

Two speed winches were not standard. I suspect the reason you are having trouble with the port winch is because the winches work clockwise and therefore you wind on the sheets from inboard out on port side and visa versa on starboard. The winch drums are probably of a greater diameter than the originals also. In any case the solution is to change the angle in which the sheet approaches the drum by raising the block from the track. Do this initially by connecting two long shackles or three standard ones between the block and the track. If this solves the problem then to protect the deck jell coat, encase the chain of shackles in heavy duty PVC piping.

Hi all, more winch questions--has anyone ever heard of a "Telo
Selftailing Winch"? It's a 2 speed that I'd like to get some more
information on.

Thanks.
