I am adding a winch to my Hunter 23 for the main halyard. I am leaving the one on the mast. What size do I need? The ones on the boat now are Barlow's single speed. All I want is something that will my needs. I am looking for a name brand but a cheaper one. I say a Lewmar 6 and 7 but I am not sure which one I need or do I need something bigger.

Thanks, shttp://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/images/smilies/advanced/dance.gif

I have those single speed maxwell 14's all over the boat. Must have been stock from Hunter on 23's or at least mine. Works well, but wish I had self tailing.

Do not suggest self tailers with the halyards but either a single speed 14 or 16 of any knind is suggested.

Is a halyard winch on a 23’ boat a necessity? I plan to run my main halyard back to the cockpit on my 25’ O’day and only use a rope clutch. I don’t have a winch now on the mast. Will adding the two turning blocks increase friction so much I need the winch?

It has been suggested. My concern is the rope clutch by itself may not be strong enough. If a good puff of wind comes up, is my concern. I am afraid that it would rip the halyard out of the rope clutch and then you have a real mess chasing a halyard, not to say what it my do the rope clutch. Just my novice thought. I try to go on the over kill rather than risk a problem. Would appreciate thoughts on my thoughts. Example is the backing plates are 1/4 thick by 4 inches wide. I just do not want anything pulling through the deck.

Teacher,
All line to cockpit set ups I have seen have the rope clutchs before the winch so the rope clutch does take the full load. I'm sure good backing plates are necessary. The rope clutches I have looked at are rated at 1100 lbs.
Good thoughts though and I am interested in any responses.

You are correct the clutch then the winch. I think my rope clutches are the same. You convinced me maybe the way to go is set it up without the winch and see what happens. When I set up I need to make sure that I leave enough room behind the clutch so if do add a winch I have the room.

Now, that makes sense. Will probably do the same thing.

The winch is needed to properly tension the halyards, you are unlikely to be able to properly do it by hand on anything larger than a 19-20 footer.

My boat uses the same winch for both main halyard and starboard jib sheet. I must remove the halyard from the winch to free it for the sheet.

Rather than rely on the rope clutch to hold, I always cleat off the main halyard.
