winch won't crank anymore

Yesterday, one of the winches on our 2001 H260 stopped cranking. The winch handle just spins around clockwise without "grabbing hold" or making any clicking sounds. If I rotate it by hand a little with a line in it and then use the winch handle, it will crank, but it seems as though it needs to be turn just right for it to catch. We bought the bought new last November. Is this something I should try to fix; or should the dealer, Hunter, or Lewmar take care of it? If I were to try and fix it, does anyone have any suggestions on what to try?

Take it apart.

Al: Take the thing apart. Sounds like one of the pawls broke or a spring broke. It may still be under warranty. It is a good time to service them when you replace the parts.

Yup, take it apart...

I think there are instructions on Lewmars website, if not it's pretty easy. Just watch out for the smaller pieces. The top part unscrews and then the whole drum pulls off. You probably have some crud stuck in there or maybe a broken pawl. Depending on what it is it's either a 10 minute fix or maybe a warranty item. Have fun!

Warranty

I agree with the others, but you might like to let Lewmar know ahead of time that you have a problem. Hunter's warranty for things like that is a year, but I think Lewmar is 3 years. You probably should buy a service kit prior to disassembly. It will most likely have the part that you need (if it is broken and not stuck). If you want to puch it, Lewmar might replace the part form the kit for you, but it most likely will be a very low cost item. If I am not mistaken, Lewmar recommends cleaning at least once a year anyway, and more often if in salt or heavy use. Good luck and get the instructions from the web site before you take it apart. Thanks....simpler than I imagined

Thanks for the suggestions Steve, Steve and Miles! On my previous older boat I had taken apart a jammed winch and was not able to put it back together (no manual) so I was a little hesitant to tackle this black box on my own. Nevertheless, I opened her up and could see the two "clips" that lock the winch will cranking (pawls?) stuck and out of the way. I pulled, cleaned, and greased them and their springs. Since I hadn't removed too much from the winch, I was able to put it all back together successfully - It works great now!

What type of grease did you use?

Al: What type of lube grease did you use? Be sure that it was winch grease or lithium grease.

Greasing prawls and springs

Have always been taught that prawls and springs should be oiled with machine oil, all else in the winch should be greased. Not clear from your post if you greased the prawls and springs, also not sure of the outcome if you did.
