Winch replacement

I'm planning on replacing the original standard winches and going to
self taining winches. Looking for ideas/experience...make, size,
single vs two speed. Also, has anyone mounted a winch on the cabin
top, stbd side for the main halyard, and if so, how is it mounted,
i.e. is that area strong enough for a winch.

Yes I have mounted 2 winches on both the starboard and port sides of the
cabin top for both halyards.... its strong enough without backing, just
use large washers. It makes putting a head sail up a WHOLE lot
easier.............

Cheers
Hal

Hi Hans

Best size of winch for teh vega is the Lewmar or Antal Self Tailing 16
(ST16). I have seen them mounted on the coachroof but if you put them there
without proper installation then beware. They can take an awful lot of
strain and the core is only very light and coupled with two thin skins of
fibreglass is not a perfect bedding. Use standard procedures for mounting
on the coachroof, see any good Fibreglass Boat Book and it will explain,
use plenty of padding and strengthining.

Kind Regards
