I'm thinking of upgrading to ST winches on my H33.

Any suggestions? Size?

Cheers,
SG

It's a surprise that they are not STs. They were standard on my '79 H37C. Mine are size 40 Lewmars( http://www.starmarinedepot.com/detail.asp?product_id=LM1300-02 ). In ten years I have lubed them once, changed one pawl spring I think. They work as good as any new charters that I have sailed.

My yankee(foresail) might not be as large as your 150 although it is oversize. My 40s are plenty but maybe you will want to consider a 44.

The yard I go to has lots of ST winches for sale, in great shape!

Harken either catalog or web site can help you size. Others might think them as peddling big winches, but if you ever hope to sail with a member of the "weaker" sex, you will want them to be able to trim, even when the wind blows.

My former '79H33 did not have stock self tailing winches. Instead of swapping them out at great expense, I installed rubber "doughnuts" from Wichard. Basically did the same thing as self tailers for $54 a pair.

I put 44's on my Cherubini H36 after I bought it 2.5 years ago. The Harken website, actually recommended the next size up for a 36'er. But from what I gathered, that would pertain to using a 150 genoa and it strong winds at that. The 44's have been fine for my 135 genoa and working jib even in strong SF Bay winds. Might take a bit of muscle to sheet in really hard, but with the winch's higher gear (slow) speed, but not really that much.

As to the original standard Barients, I could sell them for as $75 each -- They're now garden art.
