My 1981 Catalina does not have bulkhead winches mounted for the jib and main halyard. Since I have a pop up cabin top, can mount winches to help raise and trim my halyards or is this not suggested? I had a 1985 Capri that had winches mounted on the deck and they were great and my Catalina does not have them and I have trouble getting the halyards tight enough when I need to. Any suggestions out there?

I had the same questions while doing a refit of my C22 this winter. I also have a pop-top. I quickly dismissed the idea of mounting the 2 spare winches I have on the pop-top, as I felt it would be too much strain and might induce leaking. Plus I don't want to put any more holes in it.

I finally decided that since I'm still able to pull hard enough to get the mainsail set fairly well, and if I need more luff tension I have a cunningham with 2:1 purchase, I would forgo the winches for now. Instead, I put double rope clutches aft of the handrail (after I cut off the 5th loop). I still have the option of moving the clutches farther forward if I need to add the winches.

Hope my experience helps you.
