I have purchased an O'Day 27 with a set of Barient 16 winches for handling the jib sheets. These winches appear to be frozen (will not turn). I have no manuals. I am looking for information that will help me get them apart and serviced. I have found a PDF document on Barlow winches that implies that Barlow and Barient may be the same winch. I am looking for confirmation on their similarity and access to a manual and a parts source, if possible. Thanks, Ross

Barient winches

I also went looking for manuals and was unable to find any, but they're very simple to dismantle and very easy to service and reassemble. First, in the hole where the winch handle goes, there's a button at the bottom of it. Just push on that button while pulling up (or out, on the mast mounted winches) on the winch drum. There are no bearings to worry about, but be careful to not lose any of the pawls. Then just clean them and apply new grease. That's it.

winches

Carefull, I have a barlow winch winch which has a plastic drum and any organic grease freezes it up. Have to use silicone based grease. I think it is numbered w/ a P for plastic.

Here you go

Here is a link to the diagrams. You will probably have to use 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper on the plastic hub after you get it apart to get it to run smooth.

barlow winches

Go on-line to the following web address to get spare parts & other items for your old Barlow winches-- arco-winches.com -- They are located in Australia and I ordered some pawls & spring kits for the winches on my 1987 O'day 272- The prices for the kits was reasonable. Good Luck!
