I need to remove, disassemble, clean and lubricate my winches. Does anyone know of a good web site or magazine article describing the process in detail? Thanks for your help.Gary WyngardenS/V Shibumi H335
You do not state which make of winch. The Lewmar site(below) allows you to download the maintenance manuals. My Lewmars are very simple to dismantle and lube, but then I have the book.
It is for a Barient 21 winch, but it will give you the idea regardless of what type you have.If you have Lewmars, you can find schematics at their website, which is pretty nice.If you have any further questions, post your e-mail address and I will respond. Best of Luck,Rob P.S. My winches now sing when we use them on light wind days... Well worth the effort..
Rob,Thanks very much for going to the trouble of posting that article with the photographs. It's very helpful. I've also since found a section on winch maintenance in Nigel Calder's Boatowner's Mechanical and Electric Systems book that is very good. But your pictures and descriptions are great. Thanks again.Gary
I am still new to owning a larger (over 20 foot) boat, so I pull a ton of info off this site from the more knowledgeable guys. Picton, Lewis, Justin, all those guys have helped me out so much, I feel obligated to contribute any meager way I can. Maybe in 10 or 15 years, I'll be an old salt like some of the denizens of this site. Rob
in a recent article on dismantling your winches. The tip was to take a cardboard box, cut a hole in the bottom bigger than the base of the winch, and then tape the box in place to the deck around the winch. Then all the loose parts you drop (who me?) when taking it apart only bounce as far as the side of the box, not over the side like you know they would otherwise.
Hi Muff:The thing with the cardboard is a good and simple idea . . It doesn't even require a trip to West Marine!!!I did two of four winches last week .. and two of the little bearing things bounced of the boat. I had a white sheet of plastic on the ground so they were easy to find.ThanksMelody
