First, get a cardboard box that can fit over the winch and allow working room around the winch. Cut a hole in the bottom of the box and place it over the winch before you take the first piece apart. This will give you a chance at not losing any of the almost irreplaceable parts overboard. I am guessing from the boat's age that you have Maxwell winches.. Attached is an old Maxwell instruction book ..
Take pictures with cell phone or camera so you can see how it goes back together.. Good Luck !

This is a type grease I use If you can find it Timken pillow block grease EN. It's looks like blue bubblegum, or SHELL ALVANIA GREASE EP 2 Both are mil spec. We use both of these in coastal conditions.

Typically you would take the winch apart (careful not to lose ANY part). Soak them in mineral spirits (paint thinner etc) and clean throughly.

Apply a very thin coat of winch lube to the gears, paws and bearings and reassemble.

Personally I would only use winch grease.

PS: I assume you have Maxwell winches (no parts available)
