winch handle

Anyone know where I can get/order the old size winch handle (with 5/8"
shank for Lewmar winch) for a '71 Vega? My local used marine equipment
place doesn't have any going back that far, and the only one I've seen
new in a catalog (West Marine) was very expensive. I just need a cheap
nonlocking, nonratcheting backup. Thanks.

Yes, Mort, the sizes apparently changed in 72 or thereabouts. I have a
new winch handle from my previous boat (which fits all new winches
around) that does not fit the smaller winch socket in my 71 Vega. I
don't think the new Holt handle you cite in the West catalog fits the
old winch size.

Dear Tom,
I could easily purchase one in a dutch chandlers shop and mail it to you
next month when I will be in the US. Please advice,

In the past I inquired of West Marine for the Lewmar telephone number.
Lewmar makes, or was able to tell me of someone else who makes, a non
floating handle for the old size Lewmar winch, which I also have. Give
them a call.

Thanks, Douglas. I found them on the web (lewmar.com) and their 800
number there, called, and they still make the winch handle and told me
where to order it. (Over $100 new -- so I may still look around for a
used one first.)

Henk, thanks much for the offer. Lewmar US still sells them, it turns
out -- I'm just looking for an inexpensive simple one for back up, so no
need to go to that trouble or expense.

I have a 1971 albin vega #1081 with the original one speed winch..
after twenty two years , I lost a handle overboard.

If anyone has changed to other winches and has an extra handle they
want to sell, please e-mail me with details.

On another note, if anyone has converted to two speed winches and can
reccomend a type that will fit the existing base, please adise details

On a completely different subject, does anyone have an original
dodger??

Thanks much, Larry Lake

Larry, I went through the same thing with a winch handle recently. I
searched everywhere, couldn't find an old-style one anywhere, queried
this list, and got the recommendation I then used: I bought a cheap
aluminum 8-point star nonlocking handle from West Marine (for about $20
if I recall) and used a grindstone drill bit to grind off 4 points and a
flat file to finish it off square. Took about an hour's work to get it
down to fit just perfectly (after many hours lost with internet searches
and phone calls). The only old-style one I found anywhere that can be
bought new costs $114 from West. I was happy to get the job done
finally and wished I'd started grinding much sooner and saved all the
time looking! If you don't find one soon, I'd suggest doing the same!
(An advantage also is that I did not grind/file it down too far--it
locks into the winch pretty tight now and is less likely to flop out if
crew lets go of it!)

Hi,

I seem to have an "original dodger" - judging by the way it fits the
cabin entrance nicely and by the bad shape it is in ("window" is blind,
many tears). I am planning to eventually have it "copied" by a canvas
shop.

Hello Fellow Vega sailors,

It is nice to hear that many N.A. sailors are getting their boats into
the water. I,unfortunately, have a small problem. Last year I lost my
winch handle for the original Lewmar 8's. I bought a standard winch
handle from West Marine and ,of course, it does not fit. Thus I need
some guidance in my search for a replacement handle.

Best Regards

Hello Tony

Why does the new one not fit? You know I sold my winches. (I guess I
should have sold them with the handles.) If I find I can not use them
you are welcome to them. There were some early models with no taper
and there were some with 4 sides on the socket.
