Winch disc went flying into Lake Wylie - What to replace???

Okay, next project is to repair or replace my winch on my new to me 1987 Hunter 26.5. Last week, during a jibe, a line caught the top disc of my main winch.

Can I find a replacement disc for this or will I need to replace it?

If I have to replace it, I know that I need a non-tailing winch, but do I need a #6 or a #8? What is the difference? My current winch has a "16" stamped into the top of it.

Will the HARKEN #6 One-Speed Aluminum Non-Self-Tailing Winch ($155.20 @ West Marine) be what I need? It is part number Model # 370742.

measure the bolt pattern under the winch and match that that is the critical/painfull part to change

Barlow is a member of the Lewmar family. Contact them and inquire about the availability of parts for your model winch. To size a replacement, measure height and drum diameter. It looks like a cabin top mounted winch to assist with the main halyard and reefing line. Usually a smalish winch like a #6 is used for those duties in 27' boats but if you ever intend to raise someone up the mast using the main halyard I would consider upgrading it.

You are outside charllote. What specific winch do you have and I will look to see if I have an old one. If I do and it works, I will send it to you. Just reimburse for freight.

Thank you very much Dave! I will take a look at it this weekend.

By the way, Ken at Norton told me to "say Hi" back to you. They were absolutely great in getting my boat out and loaded up for me, and very fair in their charges.

Happened to me once. Lewmar self tailing winch. 15 knots wind three minimum wraps as per manufactures recomended specs.. Just as winch loaded up. The threads on the top cap failed. Called Manufacture talked to one their fine reps. Told him my sob story. They sent me a rebuilt kit. No charge. These guys are super! A fine product indeed!!!
