I have a Ken's Welding trailer. What is the winch capacity? I may have to replace mine. I can't find any marking on the winch.

Thanks:)

There are many different capacities for boat trailer winches.. Best to look carefully for markings, then try "GOOGLE". The markings may be on the bottom of the pad, underneath. .. For a Hunter 23, you'd probably be good with a 1100 pound rated winch, but the higher rated ones will be easier to use. Make sure it will fit the trailer mount bracket. Doing a good cleaning and lube of the old one can do miracles, if the bushings and bearings are in decent condition. Here is a sample of some different winches : http://www.iboats.com/Boat_Trailer_...1944678--session_id.880635993--view_id.217616

It also helps a lot to have the bunk boards, the boards that the hull sits on in the trailer, lubricated ... silicone works well.

If your winch is anything like the original winch on my H23 trailer, it really just needs to be replaced. However, this is NOT a boat that you can drag up to the post - I'm sure you realize that. You've got to float it up - and even then it ends up not being all the way up to the post once you pull it out!!!

Becuase of the trailer tilt, the boat will always end up behind the winch post by a little bit (see picture). My current solution is to winch it up on dry land with a cme-along around the keel, but what I am going to do is install the winch farther back, with a 2-position bow stop, one for loading it, one for trailering.

Ken's Welding h23 trailer

came equipped with a Dutton-Lainson model DL2500, 2500 lbs capacity winch. I just looked on my trailer. Its marked on the right side. That seems adequate for a rated displacement of 2450lbs.
As for not getting the boat all the way on the trailer, dip the trailer a few inches deeper, snug it in tight and pull the trailer/boat out. I have used the winch to yard the boat up snug, but its easier, and I don't worry as much by just getting the trailer in a few inches deeper.

Just a note of caution to all regarding winches .I had always backed my trailer down as far as possible , float the boat on and then crank . Typically after pulling out do what I had heard refered to as the macgregor stomp .For those of you who have not heard of this . You drive across the parking lot and then mash the brakes . About 3 times and the boat should be where it belongs .The note of caution however is about replacing your strap even then you think your winch is in good shape . I was sitting at the top of a very steep ramp and the boat was teetering . Because I did not want to back down the ramp again I just gave the winch a good pull and the strap snapped .At that point there was nothing holding the boat on the trailer as it teetered back and forth .Those straps seem to weaken from sitting in the sun . I got in the habit of buying a longer strap every few years and then cutting off the end so the part that was exposed to the sun was replaced more frequently . Mike

Soap the bunks

I've read a little tip to get the boat further up the line is to squirt some (biodegradable) boat soap on the bunks just before retrieval. I haven't tried it as I have had pretty good luck getting the 23.5 to the post even in the parking lot after leaving the ramp.

If you try it, please use a biodegradable lubricant.

Nice to hear that everybody with a 23 has the same issue!

This issue can cause lots of other problems. as you have probably noticed, even if the boat winches up to the post easily in the water, when you pull it out the winch cable is TIGHT. This puts a lot of stress on the bow eye, which is held in place with nuts on fiberglass. But worse - the U bolt is also the anchor for your forestay!!

I don't have a good answer yet, but I *am* going to figure out what needs to change so that when the boat is pulled up to the post in the water, it stays there while you pull it out! (A keel roller near the front of the bunks is one possibility. most of the keel would still sit on the boards, but the nose would rest on a roller. Doesn't help "dragging" the boat out of the water, but my gut feeling tells me it would eliminate the need.)
