Title: V-berth leakage problem Has anyone with a comparable 27' (1979-80) experienced water leakage in the extreme bow area? I suspect the anchor locker, but can find no suspicious areas for silicone calk treatment.

Bow Area Leakage
I, too, have had some water leakage in the extreme bow area, of a Hunter 33.5 (1990), which ends up in the forward most compartment under the Vee-Berth. I have cleaned and dried that compartment and watched it carefully. It seems to get a very small amount of water in the compartment after there has been rain. I have searched for the source and have not found any. I suspect that it is coming in around the flange of the fresh water fill fitting in the anchor well. I plan to re-bed that with silicone in the next week or so. Dick

I had water collecting in the bow area and found that it was leaking in through the genoa furling line block. On my 335 the lower part of this block is in one corner of the anchor locker and any water that enters through this block can run along the underside of the deck and enter the boat as the anchor locker is not sealed to the deck. I got the silicon gun out and sealed the joint between the anchor locker and deck in this area and so far so good.

I have a 1978 h27 and have not had a similar problem. (I'm not clear as to where your water leak is ending up - the bilge area under the chain locker or the v-berth - and whether it is from rain, or seawater while under way...) Water could be entering all sorts of places in the forepeak/bow area. Do you have a deck pipe for your anchor line? Any cleats on the foredeck? Any anchor roller setup? Have you checked the bow pulpit bases? The toerail/deck joint? Even around your navigation lights?

V berth water leak
Hi Bill - I have a '77H30. I had the same thing and fixed it. Water was leaking into the anchor locker from the overhead fittings (headstay, furler padeye, cleats etc). The locker floor is same as the base of the beds so this water can leak under the bulkhead into your bedding. I fixed the leaks to start with; in addition I made a small wood cleat about half inch high and fastened it to the anchor locker floor just in front of the bulkhead, drilled 2 small drain holes into the bilge and calked. Now if any water comes in and settles on the floor such as from wet anchor rode, it will drain to the bilge and is stopped by the small dam in front of the bulkhead. Now the bunks are always dry and no water leaks into the forward V-locker underneath. Hope this helps. Henry

In my 27', the anchor locker has no "floor" at the same height as the V-berth. It goes straight down ahead of the V-berth bulkhead and continues into the bilge under the V-berth up to the water tank's front half-bulkhead... (William hasn't answered yet to specify where the leak actually is. "Extreme bow area" doesn't exactly pinpoint it...)
In my 27', the anchor locker has no "floor" at the same height as the V-berth. Leak from anchor locker drain
I had a problem with water getting into the forwardmost bow compartment, which was sealed and filled up with water that I couldn't drain. The boat is an '89 H30G. This was bad news since freezing in the winter had damaged the bulkhead/wall of the compartment. I installed a deck plate inspection port in the v berth platform to gain access and remove the water. The water was entering through a small (invisible) crack between the hull molding and the deck molding at the anchor locker drain hole. I suspect that this could be a common problem with boats constructed this way, since any movement or twisting of the hull could break open the joint at this point. I fixed this by forcing epoxy putty into the crack from above and disassembling some trim at the foot of the V berth to gain access to the underside of this joint, and applying lots of epoxy below. I also repaired the bulkhead. So far, so good - bone dry and it's a nice feeling.

Source of another found after much searching was on the underside of the sides of the anchor locker adjacent to the locker cover. Removed the v-berth trim panel covering the water tank hoses then sprayed water in anchor locker area until source of leak determined. Visual search of the underside of the deck/locker joint with a mirror revealed voids which when siliconed cured the problem. Don't give up the hunt.

I had a similiar leak on my 81 h27. I searched for some time and finally just endured the leak. I finally found the problem when I removed the pulpit to have it modified to clear a roller fuller I was installing. The bedding around the bow pulpit mounting was all cracked and dried up and water was entering around the bolt/studs where the pulpit mounts on the deck. I also found one of the studs did not have a washer, lock washer and nut installed. Hope you find it!

Had one that was driving me nuts, every weekend I'd find a puddle in the forward part of the v-berth of my '80 27. Got out the hose and soaked the bow down. It turned out to be the bow pulpit stanchion bolt that had worked itself loose and a shot of silicon and a good tightening solved that one... Good luck, hope thats it!
