I will be buying a Mac 25 this weekend and it will need some restoring I really like the all wood interiors I see on some of the higher end boats out there but just cant afford somthing like that. I am very good at wood work and would like to do all the interior in wood. Now my question is what is the weight capasity of a boat this size. I have heard of some of you puting hard wood floors and ceilings in there boats.I just put flooring in my house and this stuff is heavy. This raisees a safety issue for me.Im thinking the weight of the wood ,gear, people, are we getting close to max load or am I being to causious.

Weight

the wood for your house floors is different than that for a boat. the boat floor is typically a peice of plywood 1/4 inch or so not heavy planks

Think resale

If you are hoping to get $ out of your fine wood working from the Mac - don't do it for that reason becasue it won't happen. If you want it for your own enjoyment that is a different matter. Macs are light boats and a lot of interior weight could be a factor, I find it hard to fathom you would sink the boat with your imporvememts, but they will effect the performance of the boat. The old 25s, while not an example of solid construction, were decent performers.

How about wood trim on the borders

of your nice light interior panels, and a couple of features, like a dish rack, new wood table, cockpit grating, maybe cockpit seats? Wood battens across the cabin top inside can give a traditional look, and mouldings where the deck and hull meet. Be careful not to make a nice bright cabin into a dark gloomy hole by covering everything with dark wood. Some of the finest yachts are finished with painted panels and wood trim. You can get lots of wood on the boat without adding big heavy pieces.

How old is the MAC?

I have been working on a 1972 Venture 24 using mahogany plywood salvaged from an old power boat. Mine needed gutting completely. A very satisfying job. first three replies are right on! There are also some plastic products that run 1/8th inch in 4'X 8' sheets I am looking into for the galley area. White, easy to clean is good!

You Can Afford It -

Several years ago I faced the same problem of wanting to use good wood to restore a 1956 mahogany Chris Craft runabout. I had bought very cheap but had no money to finish (6 kids). I found ribbon cut honduras mahogany at stores which specialized in salvaging material from old homes. The mahogany had been used in the door frames. I ripped it to my needs and used the wonderful wood to restore a wonderful boat. Be creative to make the boat your own treasure. Mike T.

Do you have pics? It sounds like you have something we would appreciate seeing, but are just being modest.

Wood is good

I owned a Mac 26S a few years back and the PO had done extensive wood work with solid teak. In the galley area the bulkhead behind the sink dividing it from the head was a solid teak wall with shelves. The door for the head was solid teak. The bulkhead forward of the head seperating the V-berth was solid teak also. There was a teak shelf under the companionway stairs. There were shelves along each setee, and the electrical panel had a teak facing with a thick moulding all the way around it. There was a fold down table that was solid teak too. There was more in the cockpit. In all the PO said that he had over $2500 worth of teak on the boat. It looked realy great and didn't seem to affect the sailing. We didn't keep a whole bunch of gear on the boat, just some basics for two to three day cruises. I'll post pics when I find them on my other computer. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the club.

When I got my Mac25 I spent the first year just getting through the basic restorations, trailer, electronics, radio, safety equipment, rigging etc. I just wanted to get it to and into the water. Now I work on it when the weather is not suitable for sailing (in So Cal weather is always good). I would also like to add more wood but I'm having too much fun on weekends sailing it. Although I enjoy working on her, the best day was when I stopped trying to make the silk purse and started having fun sailng the pigs ear. But then thats just me.
