OK, the manufacturers of portable generators have instructed their Dealers not to answer questions related to the use of the generators in boats. Their attorneys are quite adamant about the possible liabilities for an accident involving the generators, whether it be, CO poisoning, electrocution, fire, explosion or damages to expensive instrumentation. Now your question is whether a 2, 200 Watts will charge your battery bank, the answer is yes if it is used to power an inboard charger. Some generators have a 12V DC outlet but they do not do a very good job in charging batteries, more to use to plug in 12V fixtures.
If you have a shore power charger that works it should work with the generator. I use a Honda 1000 to run our 20 amp charger - no issues. (12v x 20amps =240watts. Plus some inefficiency - a bit over 2amps at 120v)
Should not be a problem unless your charger has trouble with the “floating ground” in the generator, which is easy to fix. Consider that 40 amps into the batteries is less than 1000 watts, the Yamaha should have no trouble with that load.
I've used my Yamaha generator to charge my boat while on the hard when the marina power was out with no problem. my charger is a ProNauticP Series 1230P, 30 amp charger.
