I purchased my boat a few years ago and it unfortunately was neglected by its previous owner. In an earlier attempt to bring the old dull and very oxidized finish to something more acceptable, I asked at the HOW website what was best. I got quite a few comments and many people recommended "Vertglass" . It comes with an abrasive to clean the surface and was a bit of work to use. Then the finish coats are put on. I believe there was 5 of them. This went on real easy and the boat looked great afterwards.(at least it was a huge improvement) This spring I would like to bring the shine up again. What I have is still way better then it was originally but it is not as good as shortly after application of the Vertglass. My question is, should I, or even can I, use the Island Girl products instead? Especially in light of the fact that the abrasive cleanser was used. Thanks Eric Linklater

Don't use Island Girl. . . .

without getting rid of the Vertglas. Hi Eric, figure that title will get you some action. I just bought an IG kit but have not used it yet. I don't know if the IG cleaner will take off the Vertglas but something has to before you use the other IG products. It requires a chemical reaction and I don't think it can penetrate the Vertglas.

Vertglas Followup

I had Vertglas on my h34 for three years. Each season I would clean it and add another coat (sometimes two coats near the waterline) Looked better after that but the Vertglas eventually yellowed. I stripped it off last fall. I recently contacted Polyglow and explained my Vertglas experience to them. They guaranteed me that Polyglow won't yellow. Practical Sailor actually rated them better than Vertglas and it's about the same price (maybe a bit cheaper) I recommend you continue using the Vertglas until you run out of your supply. If you switch to something else remove the Vertglas. I'll never wax again after my experience using acrylic coatings (until I get a new boat) Barry
