Will a WALKER BAY 8FT TENDER fit on the deck of a Vega?

Has anyone done it - I was just wondering if it is a sensible place to store it and if it fits without fouling too much stuff?

I have the same size Walker Bay tender and store it on the deck for the winter. It fits without a problem for that purpose. I tow it behind the Vega when underway.

barely, but you will not be able to get underway with it. maybe you could motor with it up there, but if you needed to go forward of the mast, you'd need some serious acrobatic skills. would be very difficult to negotiate the mooring lines and fenders effictively. but you could store it up there if you wanted... it provides a great way to leave the hatch open and still get lots of air circulation without the rain..

That is a pity - I liked the idea of being able to fit a sail to it!
Has anyone found a little "sailable" dinghy that will sit comfortably
on the deck whilst underway?

I bought the plans for a Two paw 8, which is a nesting dinghy. You get an 8' hard dinghy that can be sailed, that takes up almost half the space. I haven't started building it yet as I'm too focused on getting the boat done, but wanted the specs so I could arrange hardware accordingly. It's from B&B Yacht Design and you can find more info on the net.

Peter (Sin Tacha) suggested the CLC Eastport Pram at one time. I built one based on his recommendations and it works great. It fits on the foredeck and can be built with or without the sailing rig. Although it is extremely stable as built, my brother-in-law added inflatable tubes along the sides (he does a lot of offshore work) to increase stability. I'm hoping to install the sailing rig this year.

The Eastport Pram is a great little dinghy and fits on the Vega
foredeck, although it's a bit of a foot squeeze to get to the anchor. If
I were crossing oceans though I think it would be more of a liability
than an asset sitting on the foredeck
http://www3.telus.net/sailing/Dingy_On_Deck.jpg .
But for coastal cruising it's a good choice, and easy to build.

I will admit though that my 30lb Black Fly
Black Fly 8 - Geodesic AiroLITE Boats is the dinghy-of-choice
the last couple of years. Having to be careful with a fabric-covered
boat is more than offset by the ease of lifting it out with one hand,
and the way it sails
and
rows ... such a joy.

But like a lot of things: a dinghy is a very personal choice ... that's
why I have four of them!

I can't say enough how much i love the eight foot Portabote that i've been using for the past couple of years. Folds flat, lash it to a stanchion, or in bad weather throw it downstairs. Easy to store and touch as nails. Motors well, rows well, tows well, and i think they did come up with a sail kit recently. There is a trick or two to geting them assembled and in the water but its worth it to me.

Jack,
I sent you an email off line, but don't know if you received it. I was wondering where your brother-in-law got the inflatable tubes at? I want to do the same thing and have been unable to find a source. I would appreciate any help you can provide that points me in the right direction.
Thanks,

Ric

I don't have any experience with them, but a company called Dinghy Dogs makes inflatable tubes for dinghies. -tg

Ric - For some reason Yahoo would not let me reply.

They used kayak tubes for the dink. My sister-in-law stitched up some of their old sail cloth as tube covers, then lashed them to the side of the boat. The kayak tubes are easy to inflate and the covers protect them against abrasion. I believe they got the tubes from www.nrsweb.com/Tech_Talk/Infinity_Flotation.asp. Here is a link to some photos of the dink. I'll try to come up with some photos.

This is a test to see if Albin Vega Yahoo Groups is working. I have received no Albin Vega messages since this one on 11-28-11. This is highly unusual!

Everyone is laid up for the winter, or armpit deep in their bilges, catching up on sailing logs in front of a log fire, making thir boats look like Sin Tacha, passage planning for that ocean crossing next year, updating their charts, writing Present lusts from online marine store catalogues or just fallen asleep exhausted after a strenuous season. Reading you loud and clear, Melanie. Tom
