Will a transducer work through a wooden hull?

I have mounted a transom-mount transducer in a blob of vaseline within the hull of a fiberglass boat with great results. Does anyone have experience doing this in a wooden hull (glass over 1/2" ply)? I'm concerned that variances in the wood will mess up the signal, but I would rather not put a hole in the hull if I can possibly avoid it.

You will be the test case

Jeff, Science is not always simple. That is why there is so many testing labs. When you try this, Please let us know the results. Yes, that is not the answer you want to hear, but some time you have to be the one that steps out. Seriously, call the maker of the in-hull you want to use and ask them if they have tried it. If they have not ask them if it is worth anything to them if you experiment. r.w.landau

Recent info from Humminbird

I saw an add in West Marine for a fish finder, made by Humminbird. I phoned WM tech assistance to see if it could double as a depth finder. The tech made a three way call to Humminbird, and their tech told us that it would be very good as a depth finder. I was told to epoxy their transducer to the inside of the hull on my C22, and avoid any areas where there is plywood re-inforcement, because the transducer would not work.

Transducer

You might consider mounting it on the transom so that it extends just below the hull. This is how the directions to my Hummingbird suggested to mount it on a motor boat. I think this would work on a sail boat as well.

C22 Through Hull Mount - Vaseline

I have mounted a transducer to my Garmin 160 blue just forward of the fixed keel and a little starboard in a pile of vaseline. It works ok, but the signal is very weak. I believe it has something to do with some type of additional material near the keel structure. I'd like to know what the solution is to get a good signal through the hull. When I dropped the transducer on top of the water before mounting it was a great signal, like I get on my bass boat. Does anyone know a better location?

Mounted mine in mineral oil

I glassed in a short section of 4" PVC pipe, filled it with mineral oil ---- works great. I mounted it forward of the keel aimed just a tad forward. (I like to know whats coming) STILL waiting for spring. Tom s/v GAIA

Won't work through wood!!!

Signal will not pass through any material with air or air bubbles in it.

Ziplock bag

filled with water to find the best location for the transducer works every time. Finish by putting the transducer in a very large gob of silicone.

Jim's right, don't waste your time. Call the

manufacturer and they will tell you the same thing. Sonar won't work through wood.
