A poetic and cautionary tale...
We were planning to go out Saturday afternoon, too. Sounds like it's a good thing I mowed the lawn instead. (I checked marineweather.com and the TP data bouy all morning long, and threw in the towel by noon. Looks like it just got worse on Sunday.)

had a pretty crappy weekend as well
i have a mooring in plymouth mass. i was going to pull the boat out on friday (hunter 23.5). but i didnt talked with boss (wife) she said maybe a few more nice days lets leave it in till next weekend i agreed. i had to go to soccer games most of saturday (kids) checked boat from shore saturday around 7 pm all was well although it was heaving about quite a bit in the 3ft chop inside the harbor . woke up sunday morning got ready to go to church. i had abouot an hour to kill before the family was ready so i decided to go check the boat. i drove to the usual spot where i can see my boat from land. i looked from the comfoprt of the van NO BOAT where the hell is it ? i look around the harbor several boats capsized . i go to the yacht club dock and inquire as if anyone has seen my boat . this guy says is it the moonlighter i say yes . he says he was just going out in the launch to check his boat and mine let go of the mooring and went flying by him he secured it to another mooring . i could have kissed him but i gave him a fifty instead. i got to go drop kid of at ccd ill finish later

Living on the little waters does have its advantages. My wife and I went out Saturday as well, but had a great sail. Cleared the bridge at Janathan creek about 1:00 PM and headed south under reefed main and 1/2 jib in 15 to 20 knots straight out of the north northeast. That was the first time to have to reef on good old Kentucky Lake. Heeled at about 15 degrees for the next 24 miles at 3.5 to 4.0 knots. Pulled into Paris Landing Marina at 7:00 PM, just as the marina manager was closing and in time to catch a ride to the State Park Lodge. Great seafood and ribeye buffet, considering we were in western Tennessee. Slept like a couple of new borns in the marina, until the manager bumped on the hull with the offer of fresh coffee at 7:30 AM. First time I've slept to 7:30 in many a day. Wind was still out of the north so we did motor sail back for a second glorious fall day.

Thank you Jim, This has happened to us several times. We got our boat in June and more than once we've been out on a very choppy Bay, with a reefed mail and a partial jib, we've found ourselves out of control. Down right scarey! And when the chop is greater than 3 foot, getting that main sail down isn't any fun either. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone.

wow jim.... sailing in s. d. is nothing like the sport that you have. it is nice to know that my 260 Stardust can survive anything that socal can dish out. GREAT story. i love ahappy ending, thanx for sharing. dan
