What I put together and ...
... what has worked up to 5 miles, but very slow at that distance. Faster connections up to a mile are possible. At the boat yard about 800 feet from their server I can run Netflix with no problems.

...It is a little complicated if you aren't a computer person so if that would be the case I'd sure suggest going with someone that puts it all together for you in pretty much a plug and play package for just a bit more and supports it well like Island Time PC does...

Can't say enough good things about my Bitstorm booster. Runs Netflix no problem, even over public wifi setups such as optimum wifi.
what are your distance requirements? With a rotateable yagi antenna on the mast head you should be able to get upwards of 60 miles. what applications are you intending to run?
I've bought tons of things through Defender but advertising 20+ miles for the PDZ Connect AllPro ....

... is totally out of line. They are using the same Bullet radio I'm using and what a lot of others like Bitstorm and Island Time are using now or have used in the past. 5 miles is really pushing it with a good shore WiFi Hot Spot (not someone's house). WiFi is 2 way so they have to have as good equipment as you do for a really good long range connection.
The yagi is not going to work on a boat swinging on anchor and on waves rocking side to side,

I know your harbor very well and did live in Wading River for many years,but when up
on LI I always had a hard time out on my boat getting unsecured wifi and same here in Fl.
I try to do my computer stuff on shore when some place that has free wifi.
I am guessing when you are staying on your boat you like to have the internet like most of us,but find it crazy that you can get some unsecured wifi in that harbor but hey that's great for you.

Vero Beach last winter with 2-3 boats per mooring ball and slips full : nobody on the mooring balls could get a signal. We had to sit at the marina office to email home. Vero Beach in April with open mooring balls and slips since most boaters had moved on : we could get WiFi at our mooring ball in the north field. My take is the boats streaming Netflix at the slips took all of the signal strength out of the system. Happened similarly in most of the places we stayed, more boats = less signal strength. Just our observation with no scientific data to support any of it, oh well.

I'm part of the group responsible for providing wifi access at our club. We're looking into limiting bandwidth for the reasons mentioned. Streaming movies and such really pulls down the available bandwidth for others. We have a crappy microwave internet provider to start with.
Made one several years back..worked fine but I got tired of the connection speeds, etc.. Now I use phone as hot spot for lap-top and have been really pleased. I use phone alone for most stuff, but some things are best with a real keyboard and screen.

I have a couple Alfa's like above that I use in motels and such and tried one of them side by side with the Bullet HP radio that I built for the boat. The Bullet will find connections the Alfa can't see and you will have better connection speeds with one and they last a lot longer out in the weather. More on the comparison here...

The Alfa is much easier to setup and use so they have their place and if one is in a Marina I'd try it first...

I also have in the past used the phone as a Hot Spot but some phone plans prohibit that so quit. I bought a Straight Talk HotSpot...

It costs about $45 for two months service with 3-4 gigs of usage and you can buy more at a Walmart at anytime, along with the HotSpot itself. I wanted it in case I was out of range of WiFi on a trip and needed to get good weather and other boating info. It works on Verizon towers so it is still not going to work everywhere.
I still try and use my boat's long distance WiFi first as there is no band width usage limits like most phone plans have. I was able to connect a lot of places in the Bahamas but not all with it and if I go back I'll get a Batelco account (data cards) and a cheap 'unlocked' phone to use as a Hot Spot while there,

Seadaddler..... Cable vision put hot spots all over the place that can be used by cable vision (optimum) subscribers. I have a weekend Mooring (slip at old mans) and can get a signal but it's weak and is inadequate for movies or other downloading
NYSail: My Bitstorm does a better job with OptimumWifi from my mooring than it does with the marina wifi. Still not sure whether I'm just not getting the marina wifi setup properly but that said we stream Netflix over OptimumWifi using the Bitstorm pretty consistently.
I head up north for July,August,Sept in my RV and park it on my stepson's property
out east and use a wifi booster I got from Bestbuy that their tech helped me pick the proper one for my system and thinking around $80,we are 50 yards from his house but the wifi
goes in and out maybe because interference in side the RV but if outside I get perfect wifi.
With the booster plugged into 110 outlet inside the RV we get great wifi and netflex and internent all works great.
