my boat is a 1974 supposedly

PS thanks for the advise that they will cover the slot. I had already thought of that. My sails are not that large, and I have yet to use the handle to muscle my sheets in the two seasons I have had the boat, so I am not too concerned about covering the slots. I'm a fairly strong fella so bracing my feet against the opposite seat while hauling on the sheet is often adequate to 'sheet in fully'. A buddy of mine is upgrading his 'more modern winchess, so I was planning on inheriting one of his. (We were each going to add one of his leftovers and place it on the cabin top for snugging up the halyards. We were going to try the winchers on them if they did not fit my winches. I am more concerned that the profile of the top lip of my Merriman winch is too fat to accomodate the wincher. Good to hear that these winches are more common than I thought. Mine work quite well, so I do not feel that I have to upgrade, and certainly with 90 and 60 sq ft respectivly, they seem to do the job adequately. I even use them for my drifter, more as a turning block, than as a winch, because certainly they are overkill for that. I had more sail on my previous boat (Oday DS II) and had no winches.

Years ago I made a handle from a piece of steel

I got at a harware store. Taped the end and drilled a hole for a landyarn. Not pretty but worked quite well.

Winchers, self tailing, not self cleating

They are not self cleating, only self tailing.....they may will hold a sheet long enough for you to cleat off, but if you count on the winchers to replace a cleat you'll be disapointed. They weren't intended for that, and they'll fail at the worst possible moment.
