Two days ago, I bought an O'Day Widgeon from a client of mine and I'm very excited to get it on the water. I'm new to sailing, so I have a lot to learn. My client couldn't tell me much about the boat or sailing because he never had any time to learn himself. So I come to you for help. When I pulled the mast out of the boat, there are two "T" shaped parts that are supposed to be screwed into the mast...one on either side. They may be spreaders, but I'm not sure. The screws are all rusty and my client said I should get somebody to weld them on. I figure if they were screwed on, there's gotta be a reason. Can you tell me what these parts are and what they're used for?

No welding here!

Patty - What you have there are the two spreaders which should be fastened to the mast with clevis pins. They fit into the fittings on either side of the mast about one third of the way up. I don't think you could weld them on if you wanted to (which, believe me, you don't) Hope this helps, you can e-mail me directly with any other questions at hijinx@mindspring.com
