When we got our C36 two years ago it had oriental style rugs in the Saloon. I have noticed other boats have them also - Is there any particular reason/benefits for using them. I'm rug challenged
We have rugs on our boat that we purchased from Walmart. Most have marine scenes on them. It helps keep the feet warm while walking around in socks.Terry
but are machine made. Small ones aren't very costly. You can take them out and shake clean. They dry rather easily. You can distingish a hand knotted rug from a machine made rug by looking at the back. The back of a hand knotted rug will dupilcate the pattern on the face. A machine made rug will show extra non-colored twine.
I use small area rugs to help protect nicely varnished wood sole and put them in the bottom of companionway stairs and in heavy traffic areas. I use solid color rug with minimal pattern, not oriental carpets, that blend in with the upholstery.
feel good on the feet, add a little decorative flair, and protect the varnish from being scratched/gouged, although the rug backing does dull the varnish. BUT, and this is a big one, rugs must be rolled up and quickly stowed if the going gets rough; they'll slide across a heeled cabin sole at just the wrong time.
the abrasive backing material which scratches and mars boat soles. Other than that the designs may be an inspiration to provide the feeling of being or having been in a far away place.
Ross is right you should place some non skid under the rugs. Just keep an eye on the flooring as some non skid will leave a patterned mark in the wood. It can be very difficult if not impossible to remove the marks without refinishing the wood.
