I've asked this question before, and received some answers (thank you for the answers), but for the life of me I can't find my original question within the forum. So, sorry, but here goes again.
I want to convert all my bulbs on my ODay 222 to LED's, interior as well as running/steaming lights. Someone told me that I can't just replace the clear bulb in the bow red/green lensed light with a 1 nm clear LED bulb. I'm told I have to use red and green LED's, which means a whole new expensive bow light. My question is: why not. It seems 1 nm clear incandescent or clear LED would work the same. Please advise. Thanks.

You need to buy the fixtures and just wire them in. They sell high output LED navigation lights. I removed my interior dome lights a few years ago and replaced them with battery type self contained LED lights that you can buy at Walmart. They do sell the type that I could wire in but I went with the self contained. I use Velcro to stick them where I need them. It's good enough for me.

Your question and answers are in a thread in the O'Day bigger boats section. The last post is dated August 5.

LED replacement running light bulbs

"I bought 2 nm led festoons on E-Bay for about 1/2 of what everyone else is asking. (I also bought replacement led interior bulbs to replace my #1142 interior lights for $15 each). But exterior wise I only bought them for my stern light and my mast steaming light.
My question is: everything I read says that clear 2 nm festoon leds can't be used for a replacement for the clear festoon light bulb using my two color bow light and lense. And that I have to buy a separate bow light requiring separate red and green led's. Anyone know why ?? Seems to me a 2 nm clear filament bulb and a 2 nm clear led bulb should be interchangable. Hmmmmmmmmm. "

because after most of the the light is filtered out by the colored lens, it isn't visible for 2nm anymore. You can only put colored LEDs behind colored lenses.

Well, just got the "word" from Dr LED and another manufacturer: You CAN'T use a clear LED behind a colored lense for 2 nm visibility, however, according to them you CAN use a clear LED behind a colored lense for 1 nm visibility. Since my boat is under 39' I fall under the 1 nm rule, and therefore I can use a clear LED behind a colored lense, such as my bow bi-colored light. Perhaps this info will help some others in making their decision. For 2 nm, or if your boat is over 39' however, you need red behind red, green behind green, and clear behind clear

On my boat, there is only 1 bulb behind the nav light fixture so it HAS to be a clear bulb. And yes, I swapped mine out with an LED festoon bulb. It's super bright!

Thanks for the info, Fly. My 222 is fully converted now except for the bow bi-color light. It is a festoon, and I'm going to replace it next spring. Hre in the midwest we only have to have a 1 nm visibility anyway, and I doubt if any boats lighting system has been checked in years, if ever. By the way, where did you get your led festoon, and what number is it ??

I redid all my lighting last year to LED on my 222. Best investment made as it barely uses any electricity and much brighter! I went the cheap route and ordered mine through Asian suppliers using ebay. Just do a search for "led smd festoon" or "led smd" with the bulb number.
